The main issue in chest pain is to determine whether the pain is cardiac in origin? Why is this? Very simple. Cardiac pain is life-threatening whereas the vast majority of other causes of chest pain are not. Furthermore, even with todays modern technology, it is often uncertain whether chest pain if heart-related. The story of a supposedly healthy 60–year old man who just passes is physical in flying colors only to die two weeks later from a massive heart attack is all too common. In fact, this is what happened to famous television journalist Tim Russert. The author of this INFOMED indelibly remembers a patient, a 33-year-old woman with no history of heart problems, who came to the Emergency Room with chest pain. Her EKG was normal and none of the doctors ever saw a 33 year-old woman with heart disease and she was sent home. Later that day she died of a massive heart attack.

The point is that this INFOMED cannot possibly tell you with 100% accuracy what the cause of your chest pain is. Even the best doctors and most advanced equipment cannot. It can give you a pretty good idea though and let you know what steps to take.
